Our 2023 Farm Apprenticeship Program

Jireh Family Farm seeks to offer safe, stable, and affordable living for in exchange of part-time help on our 4-acre urban homestead.  The farm, located in East Durham County enjoys bustling and diverse energy with the family running the day-to-day operations.  The establishment was originally formed to produce a small batch of fresh eggs for the family.  Since 2017, it has expanded the number of livestock to include permaculture-raised pigs, rabbits, goats, and meat chicken.  Their focus is meat production (beware, vegans).  On a daily basis, the farm welcomes customers to purchase choice meats in their on-site meat market, grab a scoop of ice cream, or even buy live animals.  The weekends are slightly busier with special events, classes, and tours.

The farm is in search of an individual who is eager to learn and doesn’t mind getting their hands dirty.  The candidate should not be afraid in engaging with livestock animals, willing to be flexible, and desiring to one day establish self-sufficiency for themselves.  The family will ‘teach while doing’ various aspects of livestock farming, herb identification, gardening, and food preservation.  Impeccable character is a must.  This arrangement requires trustworthiness, thoroughness, and enthusiasm to interact with people and animals. The requested term is for (8) eight months (March 1- Oct. 31, 2023).  Please do not apply if you are not able to complete the entire term.

JFF will provide housing, water, electricity and high-speed internet service for $700 per month.  In-ground pool privileges are also included (when available). The living quarters is an on-site, 2021 25ft RV trailer that offers absolute privacy.  The space includes a TV, queen-size bed, personal kitchen, private bathroom & shower.   A single-person allotment of farm-produced meat & veggies will also be included (farmer’s choice).

In exchange, the candidate will help with farm tasks for 10-12 hours per week, (never more than 14 hours).  Responsibilities include helping daily with watering and feeding the animals, collecting eggs, aiding in our 50 x 50 ft. family garden, cutting herbs, and helping with other farm chores such as cleaning stalls, fencing mending, etc.

The farm prefers a single-person arrangement.  No pets.

We are currently looking for (1) successful apprentice for the 2023 season.  Evaluations will be extensive to ensure the right candidate.  Please read all the instructions to avoid being disqualified from consideration.

Please plan on allocating (30) thirty minutes to thoroughly complete this application. Please note: there is a $20 application/background check fee to submit your application.
